AI in cargo handling at ports can bring about significant savings, says EAC-PM member

Feb 18, 2026

India can save up to Rs 20,000 crore by using AI in cargo handling at ports, said Mr Gourav Vallabh, Member of Economic Advisory Council to PM (EAC-PM), while speaking at the session ‘AI-Powered Ports: Reimagining Efficiency and Operations’ at the AI Impact Summit here. He highlighted that India is emerging as a global leader in the new technology. The question is not whether AI will transform India’s ports, but whether India is going to lead the change.

He noted that India’s logistics cost at 7.97% of GDP is competitive, but for the Viksit Bharat 2047 aim, ports should be intelligent and have an intelligent ecosystem. He said India needs accelerated policy initiatives to reduce logistics cost. He also listed several areas of AI application in ports to improve performance, as per a report.
