The Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF) has called for a measure of reasonableness from global shipping lines as freight costs continue to spiral. With the Strait of Hormuz blockade disrupting traditional trade routes, exporters are facing war risk surcharges and container shortages that threaten India’s multi-billion-dollar rice trade. Exporters have reported that freight rates to key destinations in the Middle East and Europe have nearly tripled in the last eight weeks. The BEDF highlighted that while the industry acknowledges the operational challenges posed by the blockade war, the current pricing structures are becoming unsustainable for seasonal agricultural commodities. The forum is urging the government to intervene and establish a transparent mechanism for freight adjustments to protect India’s export competitiveness, according to a report.
