Israeli strikes around Iran’s Chabahar targeted military infrastructure but did not hit the India-funded Shahid Beheshti Terminal, according to reports. The strategic Gulf of Oman port hosts commercial facilities alongside air, naval and missile sites. India’s operator, India Ports Global Limited, is functioning under a six-month US sanctions waiver valid till April 26, 2026, and has shifted most daily operations to Iranian staff to mitigate risk. Washington had earlier warned of 25% additional tariffs on countries engaging with Iran.
The terminal handled 2.23 million tonnes in FY25, up 82% over five years. Current capacity is 8 mtpa, with plans to expand to 18 mtpa. India has committed $120 million in equipment and a $250 million credit line under a long-term pact signed in May 2024, as per a report.
