Engaging in active diplomacy to ensure safe passage of Indian vessels; attacks on merchant ships unacceptable: PM

Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi, while addressing Parliament on Monday, declared that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and attacks on merchant vessels in West Asia are not acceptable. Amid rising regional tensions, the Prime Minister emphasised that such actions disrupt critical international maritime routes and global energy supply chains. The PM reiterated India’s strong opposition to the targeting of commercial shipping and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical bottleneck responsible for a large portion of global oil and gas shipments. 

India has been engaging in active diplomacy to ensure the safe passage of Indian vessels and personnel, he said, highlighting that such disruptions are detrimental to national interests. With India importing a significant portion of its LPG and crude oil through this route, the government is monitoring the situation closely and actively interacting with regional stakeholders for a peaceful resolution. The PM added that he has engaged with several West Asian leaders to urge dialogue and de-escalation, as per a report.
