Escalating conflict in West Asia has disrupted Maharashtra’s grape exports to Gulf markets, leaving large consignments stranded at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority. Around 300 containers, or roughly 3,900 tonnes, had already been shipped toward Dubai when transport routes became uncertain due to regional tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran. Another 700 containers are currently stuck at the port and nearby cold storage facilities awaiting vessel schedules. Exporters had procured grapes from farmers at Rs 120–RS 170 per kg for overseas markets, but a prolonged disruption could force diversion into the domestic market, where prices are significantly lower. According to the Maharashtra Grape Growers Association, 5,000-6,000 tonnes of grapes at ports are immediately at risk, while about 10,000 tonnes remain in vineyards awaiting export. With the Gulf a key destination during Ramadan, traders fear a domestic supply glut that could sharply depress prices, according to a report.
