India outlines strategic plan to shield exports from Iran war impact

Apr 7, 2026

The Indian government is proactively monitoring the escalating West Asia conflict to safeguard the nation’s trade interests. The Commerce Secretary, Mr Sunil Barthwal, said that the Ministry is in constant dialogue with exporters and various departments to address logistical hurdles and rising freight costs. To mitigate the impact, the government is exploring alternative shipping routes and diversifying markets to ensure that India’s export momentum, particularly in engineering, petroleum and agricultural products, remains resilient despite the geopolitical volatility.

While the crisis has increased transit times and insurance premiums, Mr Barthwal emphasised that the government is committed to providing necessary policy support to keep Indian goods competitive. Officials are also assessing the credit needs of exporters to ensure that liquidity remains available during this period of uncertainty. By maintaining a flexible strategy and closely tracking global developments, the Centre aims to shield the domestic economy from severe supply chain disruptions and inflationary pressures, according to a report.
