Jaishankar-Araghchi talks deliver: Indian vessels get green light via Hormuz

Mar 13, 2026

Following direct talks between External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and his Iranian counterpart Mr Abbas Araghchi, Iran has granted Indian oil tankers/vessels permission to transit the Strait of Hormuz — a significant diplomatic breakthrough as the waterway remains effectively shut to US, Israeli and Western-linked shipping. At least three Indian tankers are said to have passed safely through the Strait of Hormuz.  According to reports, a Shenlong Suezmax oil tanker carrying crude oil from Saudi Arabia has arrived at Mumbai Port, marking the first India-bound vessel to safely transit the strategic waterway since the war began. The Liberia-registered tanker loaded crude oil at Ras Tanura oil terminal on March 1 and began its journey two days later, as per a report.

Iran has tightened control over maritime traffic through the Strait and any vessel intending to pass must obtain permission from Iran, as per reports in the Iranian media.
