LNG/LPG India-bound tankers queue at Hormuz

Mar 17, 2026

Mr Rakesh Kumar Sinha, Special Secretary at the Ministry of Shipping, said six LPG tankers and one LNG tanker — collectively carrying approximately a month’s energy supply for India — are awaiting safe transit west of the Strait of Hormuz. Indian-flagged LPG carriers Shivalik and Nanda Devi have already crossed the Strait, each carrying roughly 46,000 tonnes of LPG, and were scheduled to berth at Mundra and Kandla on March 16 and 17, respectively. The remaining six LPG carriers are estimated to carry a combined 2.76 lakh tonnes — nearly matching India’s average monthly LPG consumption of 2.81 million tonnes. Ministry of External Affairs Spokesperson Mr Randhir Jaiswal confirmed that the Prime Minister, External Affairs Minister and Indian Missions are actively engaging the US, Israel, Iran and GCC countries on energy security and maritime transit. Four crude tankers, three container ships and two bulk carriers also await passage, according to a report.
