MSC’s fleet surpasses 7.2 Mteu total capacity milestone

MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company’s fleet has reached another milestone in a short timeframe, this time surpassing the 7.2 Mteu mark.

This gives the world’s largest carrier a 21.4% market share of the existing container ship fleet. MSC also has another 2.18 Mteu of capacity on order, giving it the fourth-highest orderbook-to-existing-fleet ratio among the Top 10 carriers, as per an Alphaliner analysis.

MSC’s total fleet is also approaching the 1,000-vessel mark, with 980 units currently in active service.

Of those, 727 vessels with a combined capacity of 4.55 Mteu are owned, while the remaining 253 ships, representing 2.65 Mteu of capacity, are chartered, the report added.
