The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has announced multiple transformative reforms aimed at strengthening India’s shipping sector and reducing logistics costs. Aligned with the Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047 and Sagarmala, the plan introduces a dedicated sector regulator and a Rs 25,000 crore financing facility to assist Indian companies in expanding their fleets. A central pillar of the initiative is the creation of shipbuilding clusters to modernise local shipyards and reduce reliance on foreign carriers. Sustainability is also a priority, with the introduction of new green port guidelines and the promotion of green hydrogen and cleaner harbour craft.
The government aims to double the share of coastal shipping and inland waterways from 6% to 12% by 2047. Furthermore, smoother port operations will be achieved through green channel clearances and simplified digital approval processes, ensuring more control over international trade routes and more resilient domestic infrastructure, as per a report.
