Three ships hit in a single day — Hormuz now a combat zone

Mar 13, 2026

March 11 marked the most intense day of maritime attacks since Operation Epic Fury began, with three commercial vessels struck in and around the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s IRGC confirmed it targeted the bulk carrier Mayuree Naree and Liberian-flagged container ship Express Rome, citing both vessels for ignoring alerts and warnings. Star Bulk’s Marshall Islands-flagged Star Gwyneth sustained hull damage 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai, while Japanese-flagged container ship ONE Majesty was struck near Ras al-Khaimah. IRGC naval commander Admiral Alireza Tangsiri declared that every vessel must obtain Iranian permission before attempting transit. UKMTO has now logged 17 incidents — 13 confirmed attacks and four suspicious activity reports — since February 28. The International Energy Agency announced the largest strategic reserve release in its history — 400 million barrels — to counter soaring oil prices, according to a report.
