Trump blinks: 5-day strike pause signals Hormuz talks gaining ground

US President Donald Trump announced on Truth Social on March 23 that he has instructed the Department of Defence to postpone planned military strikes against Iranian power plants for five days, citing very good and productive talks with Tehran over the past two days toward a complete and total resolution of hostilities in the Middle East. The announcement came hours before Trump’s self-imposed 48-hour deadline, set Saturday, threatening to destroy Iranian power plants unless the Strait of Hormuz was fully reopened. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards had warned they would retaliate by striking Israel’s power plants and electricity supplies to US Gulf bases if Trump followed through. Fears of strikes on Gulf power grids had raised alarm over mass disruption to desalination plants supplying drinking water across the region. Brent crude fell approximately 7% to around $104 per barrel immediately following Trump’s post, according to a report.
