US container imports up 4.1% in January, but remain below year-ago levels

Feb 24, 2026

US container imports rose 4.1% month-on-month in January 2026 to 2.32 million TEUs, according to data from Descartes Systems Group, signalling steady but cautious trade activity. However, volumes were 6.8% lower than in January 2025, reflecting a more normalised import cycle after last year’s tariff-driven frontloading. Despite the annual dip, January volumes were marginally above the six-year average and 11.8% higher than January 2019 levels, indicating structural resilience in US demand. Imports from the top 10 origin countries climbed 7% sequentially, led by China (+9.3%) and India (+22%). Vietnam, Thailand and Hong Kong also posted gains, while Italy and South Korea saw declines. China-origin shipments, though higher than in December, were sharply down 22.7% year-on-year. Port transit times showed only modest shifts, with no signs of widespread congestion. Analysts note that tariff uncertainty and geopolitical risks continue to temper importer confidence and complicate planning, according to a report.
