Driven by severe disruptions from the conflict in West Asia, a historic shift occurred in India’s energy landscape as the United States overtook Qatar to become the country’s largest supplier of liquefied natural gas (LNG) during the March-May 2026 period. The reversal highlights the severe operational impact of the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and a direct Iranian missile strike in March that damaged two production trains at Qatar’s Ras Laffan complex—the world’s largest LNG export facility. This forced Qatar Energy to idle operations and significantly curb exports for more than three months. According to shipping data from Kpler, the conflict triggered a drastic reshuffling of trade volumes. Washington supplied 1.5 million tonnes (mt) of LNG to India during the three-month window, capturing a leading 25.86% share of total imports, according to a report.
