India’s basmati rice exporters are bracing for disruptions as the escalating West Asia conflict threatens shipments to one of their largest markets. Industry officials estimate that about 60,000-70,000 tonnes of basmati rice are currently on the high seas, with some consignments nearing the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas. Exporters fear delays if hostilities persist, potentially derailing plans for a record export year. India shipped 5.38 million tonnes of basmati during April-January 2025-26, up 11% from 4.84 million tonnes a year earlier. The industry had been targeting a record 6.5 million tonnes for the fiscal year. Exporters are scheduled to meet officials from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority to assess the situation and explore possible government support if shipping disruptions continue, as per a report.
